2020 Vision

[Original post 9.24.2020]

Here we are, 9 months into the year that pretty much everyone had such big plans for. I don’t know about you, but there have been quite a few times where I’ve said aloud, “2020 sucks ass!”. Then I came across this gem the other day:

I don’t know her, but homegirl is 100% correct! Yes, a majority of us have went through some extremely difficult situations this year but there have also been plenty of positives!!

At the end of 2019 I had asked God to continue to provide me with clarity. Considering the new year, it seemed very fitting. Although the world has been halted since March, my world has been steadily evolving and I couldn’t be happier.

I wanted to take the time and focus on the points of the tweet above. So let’s dig in shall we?

  • Stillness & Value of time — Like most people, I’m always on the go (at least, I was). I felt like I was barely home long enough to get a decent amount of sleep and there was never enough time in the day. At first I was annoyed at the fact that I couldn’t go out galivanting like before, but then I realized: This is amazing! I’ve been sleeping better, therefore I’ve had more energy. I’ve been able to write poetry again (Don’t worry, I’ll share it with you guys soon enough). I’ve been perfecting my crafts. Ironically, being able to sit still has made me (and a lot of other people I know) the most productive.

  • Purpose/Identity/Vision — As I’ve mentioned in a few previous posts, I turned 30 this past April. Up until this year I was struggling to figure out what my purpose was and what made me happy. It’s like a mental lightbulb turned on for me around my birthday. I’ve had SO much time to think over the last 6 months. (I’ve also had so much time to cry, pray, and cry some more.) All my “idle time” consisted of me thinking about what mark I was going to leave on this world. I know now that my purpose is to help people, I just haven’t quite figured out to which magnitude.

  • Exposure & Truth — This could be discussed on a few different levels but this is my take: 2020 exposed me to new passions and new (some being very ugly) truths about myself. I discovered that painting calms my spirit & singing was a childhood dream that I had shelved. I also realized that I’m not as nice of a person as I use to be. Now, maybe some of you have been exposed to the true side of people you thought cared, or maybe you discovered the truth about your job. (you know, that most jobs treat the essential personnel like shit…). Either way, it’s hard to ignore truths that are so blatantly obvious.

  • Patience & Love — Simply put: 2020 humbled tf out of us and forced us to be more patient and love each other more. Don’t think I have on blinders and can’t see that some people still don’t give a damn about anyone but themselves, but overall I think a lot of people have come together for the greater good. For example, I’ve seen SOOOOO many amazing people stand with AND for the Black Lives Matter movement. (Thank you!!) I’ve also had more people than I can count tell me, “Stay safe”. That use to only be something my friends & family would say to me. Honestly, it warms my heart.

  • Returning — Now this one could mean a slew of things as well but I took it to mean this: We are returning to the basics; the things that truly matter. People are spending more time with their families. They’re finding creative ways to have fun with their kids at home. A lot of parents are working from home now so their time commuting is now extra time spent cooking or eating dinner as a family. We’re returning to the simple, yet holistic things that our hearts desire.

You should know by now that I love a good thought-provoking question, so let me ask you: How have the things listed in the tweet above impacted your 2020?

Do you feel spiritually better? Are you spending more (or any) time doing the thing(s) that fuel you? Have you been more patient and loving towards those you come in contact with each day?

If you answered no to any of those questions, you have homework. So get your screenshot trigger fingers ready! Here it is:

You had a vision of how you wanted this year to go pre-COVID. Find a creative way to do at least 3 of the things you wanted to.

Need an example? We planned on vacationing in Hawaii for my bonus baby’s 10th birthday this year. Instead, we planned a Hawaiian themed birthday party (which included the CUTEST birthday cake that looked like a pineapple). Planned on going back to school and living on campus? Set up a rendezvous with your college friends. You have roughly 2 months to plan a Friendsgiving.

My overall point is this— 2020 isn’t what most of us imagined, but our vision definitely got clearer.

Until next time; Be You. Do You. LOVE YOU 💜
