No Self-Rejecting in 2021

[Original post 12.31.2020]

A Facebook friend/ college associate of mine posted this perfectly timed message that I want to share with the masses:

How often have you found yourself putting off things/experiences or hiding talents? What about not going out for positions/promotions? Maybe you don’t tell people your true feelings for fear of being rejected? I’ve personally done all of these things at some point and I’m sure most of you have too. (Hell, it took me over a year to tell anyone about this blog!)

Self-rejection is caused by so many different things. Fear, lack of confidence, and feelings of unworthiness are some top reasons. A lot of these feelings stem from childhood or young adulthood for most of us. Some of us can pin-point when/why self-rejection became an issue for us, some can’t. The more important thing is, what are you doing to change?

Have you been to therapy? (Seriously, go to therapy at least once and see if alters your life a little.) Are you reading self-help books? Journaling? Getting your chakras in order?

The point I’m making is this: What have you done or plan to do in order to combat self-rejection?

We’re coming up on a new year and as we’re reflecting on what I like to call “the infamous 2020” it’s important to decide whether we’re going to look back and see the glass as half empty or half full. Personally, I’m choosing to look at it as half full. Yeah, there were pretty low moments but I can say that despite some of my trees being burned down, my forest flourished. Overall this is probably the less stressful, most exciting year I’ve had in a while. Perspective is everything right now when reflecting on 2020.

I stepped out of my comfort zone several times this year, even though I battled numerous thoughts of self-rejection. I co-wrote a blog with someone I admire as a person and a writer (check it out here), I promoted my blog more and ended up having a post viewed over 350 times (my second highest is 160 views), I was a guest on two different podcasts (On Muvas and Brownskin Blueprint), and I went back to school.

I was so excited for all of these things but I almost talked myself out of doing them several times. I questioned whether I was a good enough writer to collab with Brittany. I questioned whether I should continue blogging because I wasn’t sure I was reaching people. I was super nervous about being on a podcasts because truthfully, I hate my voice. I questioned whether I was too old to go back to school.

But you know what, I did all of it anyway…and IT FELT FUCKING GREAT!!

So let me ask you, are you going to wake up each day with the mindset that no matter what, you are capable of doing great things? Capable of being a great person? Capable of knocking out goals? You may feel like it’s impossible, but don’t let that stop you from even trying!

Go for that career change! Share your “hidden” talent with the world! Take that risk! And if shit hits the fan, that’s okay. You can always refocus, refine, and/or rebuild. And remember this—

I mean, some things do require patience but you get the gist. Here’s to a wonderful year of self-approval and positivity!

Until next time; Be YOU. Do YOU. LOVE YOU 💜
