Run Your Own Race

Hey friends!!! Hope you’ve all been well.

First let me start by saying, HAPPY BLACK HISTORY MONTH ✊🏽 To all my POC, make sure you’re doing it for the culture always, but especially this month!

Now let’s get straight to business shall we—

This last year I took a hiatus from writing and to be honest, I don’t feel bad about it at all. (Sorry, not sorry.) Don’t get me wrong, I had my moments where I felt like I wasn’t serving my purpose.. but looking back on it now, I had to live my life uninterrupted so I could be a better version of me.

In those moments where I felt like I should’ve been writing, I realize that I only felt that way because I was comparing myself to other writers and how much they were posting. Which brings my to the point of today’s #TedTalk — Run your own race!

We get so caught-up in thinking we’re not doing enough. Now, sometimes we aren’t & we need to simply get our shit together. Most times though, we’re doing plenty. We all have our own journey and our own lessons to learn. (And sometimes we have to learn the same lesson over again because we’re hardheaded!)

I learned a lot during my hiatus but I wanted to share a few gems with you:

  1. We’re all exactly where we need to be. Don’t stress how far you still have to go to hit your finish line /goal. Instead, appreciate how far you’ve gotten. Appreciate your determination to finish. Pat yourself on the back for staying in the race!

  2. Move at a pace that feels right to you..we’re only racing ourselves. Now, this is super important.. YOU ARE YOUR ONLY COMPETITION!! If you feel like you need to do more, do that! But don’t do it just because you’re trying to compete with someone else. (Most times, you’re competing with someone who doesn’t even realize that you’re competing against them anyway.)

  3. Detours are okay. Taking breaks are okay. Seriously. BREAKS ARE OKAY!!! (Yes I had to yell at you.) Society likes to plant this idea that we have to constantly be on the go, grinding, & climbing to the top. That does nothing but cause you to be burnt out. If you need to put your phone on DND for 24hrs and sit in solitude or take a nap, do that shit! Life won’t fall apart because you limited access to your peace for a day.

  4. Stay hydrated. Drink your water, but more importantly, fill yourself with goodness. Surround yourself with good people. Pray. Meditate. Exercise. Soak up the sun. Quench your thirst for all the good things you deserve. (Always remember, you deserve ALL the good things baby!)

  5. Enjoy the journey. Seriously, enjoy it. Life happens SO fast.

My mood for 2022—

I hope you know that the only person you need to impress is yourself. No one knows what it took for you to get to the point you’re at now. If no one has told you lately— I’m proud of you!

Until next time; Be YOU. Do YOU. LOVE YOU 💜
